Reserve Hours

Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve
is open 364 days a year
(Closed Dec. 25).

Reserve hours are from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 30 minutes before sunset. Actual closing time is posted at the trail head.

The Reserve is closed on rainy days.

Title: Elfin Forest Interpretive Center Docent                Application
Reports to: Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve (Reserve) Supervisor

Education: 
Successfully complete the Reserve docent training; high school diploma or equivalent; valid CPR/AED and First Aid certification within 3 months of becoming a docent.

Qualifications:
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with docents, Reserve staff, and a diverse public; ability to work independently; ability to operate a telephone and camera; ability to effectively utilize a personal computer and peripherals; general knowledge of local flora and fauna; ability to write clear and concise notes.

Time Requirements:
After successful completion of the docent training, volunteer 6 hours a month for a minimum of six months. Attend docent meetings and workshops.

Other Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid California Driver’s License; provide proof of medical insurance and proof of automobile insurance.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to tolerate periods of sitting and exposure to outdoor elements; may on an infrequent basis assist with lifting up to 20 pounds; good hearing, eyesight and speech capabilities; good verbal and written communication skills; ability to work in all types of weather.

Environmental Conditions:
Work is primarily performed indoors. Subject to noisy conditions, odors, contact with animals, insects and vegetation. When working indoors, work is performed in an enclosed office setting with lighting and ventilation. Subject to conversational noise within the facility; standard background noise found in a public environment and exposure to a computer screen. Appropriate personal safety equipment is provided.

Activities and Responsibilities:
  • Familiarize public with the Reserve so they leave the Interpretive Center feeling informed and comfortable exploring the Reserve.
  • Offer general information about the Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD), The Escondido Creek Conservancy (TECC), the Reserve and the Interpretive Center.
  • Serve as an informal good will ambassador for OMWD, TECC and the Reserve.
  • Stay informed about Reserve services, schedule and activities.
  • Assist with special Interpretive Center projects.
  • Attend docent meetings and workshops.
  • Ensure displays and artifacts within the Interpretive Center are not vandalized or stolen.
  • General cleaning and housekeeping.
