The latest exhibition at the Elfin Forest Interpretive Center Honoring Susan J. Varty was unveiled on July 6, 2012, featuring insect specimens collected from around the world by Harmony Grove resident Marvin Valverde. Mr. Valverde was born and raised in the tropical rain forest of Costa Rica. At an early age, he developed a love for insects and has been collecting and raising them since 1978. He has worked with world famous collectors such as Kirby Wolfe. He has traveled around Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru where he has collected butterflies like the giant blue morpho and many exotic beetles. His collection includes a large number of California insects, especially those found in the Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest areas. The insect exhibit, appropriate for all ages, features over 30 displays and will continue through September. The exhibit was made possible by the Escondido Creek Conservancy in partnership with Olivenhain Municipal Water District. For the hours of operation of the Elfin Forest Interpretive Center Honoring Susan J. Varty, please call 760-632-4212. Those interested in insects are also welcome to attend monthly presentations at the Interpretive Center by Bill “the Bug Guy” Burkhardt. Mr. Burkhardt has a master’s degree in entomology and has volunteered at the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve since February 2011. His presentations, suitable for ages 4 through adult, include an amazing slideshow, looks under the microscope, and answers to insect-related questions. Bill the Bug Guy’s upcoming visit to the amazing insect kingdom is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. September 15, 2012. |
